The Flying Cloud, the most luxurious private yacht in the world, was launched in Italy in 1927. Here it flies the American flag under the ownership of Nelson Warden of Philadelphia while anchored near Monaco, circa 1932. Warden bought the Flying Cloud (later the Fantome) from the Duke of Westminster. The big windows aft would later illuminate Fantome’s dining saloon.

The entrance to the quarterdeck private suites, a carved, concave shell, was designed to resemble the front door of a typical Cotswold cottage. The Duchess of Westminster described the suites as “almost too odd to be believed.” The shell and the ornate stairways to the poop deck were retained by Windjammer when the well deck (foreground) was bridged over to become the “lobby” on A deck. A portion of one of these banisters was found on Guanaja after the Fantome disappeared.
